Those things which are connected to the internet, so that we can control it from anywhere or we can make our things capable to take their decision on your own. Internet of things is an ecosystem of devices or things that are accessible to the internet. The number of IoT devices increased 31% year-over-year to 8.4 billion in 2017 and it is estimated that there will be 30 billion devices by 2020. The global market value of IoT is projected to reach $7.1 trillion by 2020.
Applications of IOT
Hone Automation- We all know in our home there is a fan, bulb and any other things. If we connect all devices with internet then we can access it from anywhere in the world, if we forgot to turn off the light of our home,we can turn it off easily by using internet of things.
Self driving cars- In self driving cars various sensors are used that detect obstacles and if road is clear than speed automatically increases. There are cameras for object detection and path detection.

Smart Cities- There are many things comes under the smart cities. Now we can easily can traffic congestion on maps and it helps a lot , map is not showing traffic but also directs preferred route with time.Waste management , we can detect rubbish level in the dustbins to optimize the trash collection routes. If rubbish level gets full then message will send to the rubbish car.
Smart Water- In Potable water monitoring Monitor the quality of tap water in cities, chemical leakage detection in rivers, pollution level in the sea., Monitoring of water level variations in rivers, dams and reservoirs.
All these applications are at very large scale. But if you want to perform it in your home you can perform home automation but you should have some programming knowledge there are some micro-controller are used in it .
1.Raspberry Pi
2. Arduino
There are some sensors -
1. Ultrasonic sensor
2. Temperature sensor
3.PIR sensor ,etc.
